Romania’s Fmr Sea Captain President Vows To Take Country Safe Ashore

Romanian president Traian Basescu, a former sea captain, said Saturday at an election rally in Timisoara, western Romania, that Romania is a ship whose crew he trusts and promised to take it safe to shore once the crisis, which he deemed a storm, passes.

„I look at the crisis as a storm and I am captain of the biggest ship that bears the holy name of Romania. This ship has a crew of 22 million and a captain with a tight grip on the helm. I trust Romania’s crew and I will take it safely back to shore after the storm. Trust the captain,” Basescu told about 15,000 people at the campaign rally.

The president said he expects the country to register economic growth in the second quarter of next year.

Basescu is running for reelection on November 22.
