Geoana said Saturday he invites presidential candidates to participate in a public debate on economic and social issues in Bucharest, adding his and President Traian Basescu’s campaign staff can have talks on the details of the meeting.

Geoana said Thursday he invited Basescu to participate in a public debate, adding the meeting might take place in a university.

Basescu’s spokesperson Sever Voinescu said Friday Basescu accepted Geoana’s invitation and proposed the meeting should take place in Cluj-Napoca on Saturday.

„If I were to be ironic, I would say Traian Basescu’s proposition to hold a public debate Saturday in Cluj, where he participates in electoral events, might be replaced with an invitation for a public debate in Macin where I too participate in electoral events with social democrat voters. But I believe this kind of debate is far too serious and important,” Geoana said.

Geoana said his invitation is still valid, adding a first debate in Bucharest will be followed by talks on foreign policy and national security in Cluj, at the Babes -Bolyai university.

Romanian presidential candidates democrat liberal Traian Basescu and liberal Crin Antonescu will participate Saturday in a public debate in Cluj-Napoca, northwestern Romania, at 3 p.m.
