Romania’s President Regrets Having Promulgated Law On 50% Wage Increase For Teachers

Romania's President Traian Basescu said Saturday during a debate held in Cluj-Napoca, northwestern Romania, he regrets having upheld the law on a 50% wage increase for teachers, adding he promulgated the law without having knowledge of the real state of the budget.

Basescu said he made this decision based on how much of the budget allotted to the Education Ministry was spent and considered there were enough resources.

Liberal leader Crin Antonescu, who participated in the debate, said teachers were victims of election campaign lies and the promise of a 50% wage increase was the biggest lie of all.

Antonescu added education system can be improved only if it benefits from finances and proper laws.
