Romanian President Refrains From Talking About Country’s EU Commissioner

Romanian President Traian Basescu said Thursday there were talks about Romania’s future EU commissioner during the EU leaders’ meeting in Brussels but said he doesn’t want to discuss the issue publicly to avoid jeopardizing the country’s chances for a substantial portfolio.

„Of course we discussed the issue (of Romania’s future EU commissioner – e.n.) but I don’t want to discuss this publicly because I don’t want to dim our chances at a good portfolio,” Basescu said after the EU leaders’ meeting.

The president also said proposed commissioners would be heard in the European Parliament after January 10, 2010.

Romania’s government has nominated Dacian Ciolos, a former agriculture minister, for the position of EU commissioner and authorities have said repeatedly the country targets the agriculture portfolio.
