Romanian Telecom Regulator Wants Lower Phone Number Portability Fee Cap

Romanian communications regulator ANCOM wants to lower the ceiling on the fees paid by telephony operators for number portability, from EUR13 to EUR7on fixed telephony and from EUR11 to EUR5 on mobile telephony, the regulator said Thursday.

Thus, ANCOM submitted to public consultations the decision to lower fees, according to a press release issued Thursday.

The regulation states that operator switches for each fixed telephony number will cost at most EUR7 while operator switches for mobile telephony numbers will not cost more than EUR5.

The proposition is based on an analysis performed by the authority, which compared the fees applied on other European states with the local ones.

Portability costs are covered by the receiving operator.

Romanian telecom users can opt as of October 21, 2008 to change their telecom operator for another one while keeping their telephone number.
