Romania’s Jan Unemployment At 8.1%, Highest In 7 Years

Romania’s unemployment rose for the 18th consecutive month in January, and the jobless rate reached an almost seven-year high at 8.1%, official data showed Monday.

In December, the unemployment rate was at 7.8%, significantly higher than 4.9% in January 2009.

The total number of unemployed people rose to 740,982 in January, from 709,383 in December, according to the National Employment Agency ANOFM data.

Romania has not seen a jobless rate of 8.1% since March 2003, when the rate was 8.6%.
