The landslide, caused by heavy rainfall and melting snow, affected the railway on a portion of about 30 meters and blocked two trains Saturday evening. About 100 passengers on board the two trains were taken to their destinations by bus.

Local prefect Ion Mitu said the landslide was very close to causing a catastrophe as one of the two trains managed to hit the brakes just 20 meters away from a falling electricity post.

Authorities in western and southwestern Romania are on alert as flooding is expected following heavy rain and melting snow. In the southern Romanian city of Craiova, two houses collapsed and 60 others were flooded Saturday night.
