The layoffs may be performed through a government decision, Popa said.

Premier Emil Boc said Tuesday that over one hundred of AVAS employees entered medical leave to avoid the unitary pay law subject to which salaries were cut from RON17,000 to RON2,500.

Early January, Government spokesperson Ioana Muntean said that AVAS restructuring may be envisages within the restructuring process of all governmental agencies.

Governmental sources told MEDIAFX the government aims at dissolving AVAS whether by merging it with the Economy Ministry’s Office of State Participation and Privatisation in Industry or by setting up a new department.
