Basescu told a news conference in Brussels, at the end of the European Council spring works, that all states are facing difficult times and none of the European big economies reported positive growth this year.
The president said Europe is the continent with the most insignificant economic growth, adding Romania depends on the economic revival of the biggest EU markets.
According to Basescu, Europe will resume economic growth this year, estimated at an average 1%. He said European officials believe employment will not be resumed if economic growth is no higher than 2%. Basescu added he cannot say for sure if the scenario applies to Romania as well.
Regarding the conclusions reached during the European Council summit, the president said no objective concerning poverty has been adopted, as the EU member states still have to agree on the criteria to define poverty.
Basescu said talks also focused on delayed reforms in the Union, adding he mentioned reforms in the education sector which is a matter of concern for many EU member states, especially when it comes to the connection between the education system and economy.
