The Romanian Government’s committee for emergency situations decided Sunday to keep the country’s airspace closed until Monday 12 p.m. local time, because of the plume of volcanic ash sweeping across Europe.

This restriction will not apply to aircraft flying more than 8,000 meters above Romania, Prime Minister Emil Boc pointed out.

„The plume of volcanic ash covers Romania’s entire territory at the moment, but the maximum allowed pollutant concentration has not been exceeded and there are no issues related to air quality, and no special recommendations for the public,” Boc said.

Boc said the decision to restrict air traffic was not taken exclusively by Romanian authorities, but is directly related to information passed on by officials of the European Civil Aviation Conference and European Union.
