Romania’s Clunkers Program Has Served Goal To Back Local Auto Industry – PM

Romania’s car park renewal program, in which the government pays people to scrap their old cars and buy new ones, has served its purpose to support the local car industry as more than half of new cars sold were made locally, Prime Minister Emil Boc said Friday.

„I’m very glad that more than half of new cars bought under the clunkers program were made by Dacia-Renault. That means our goal to back the local auto industry has been reached,” Boc said during a visit to the factory of Romanian carmaker Dacia in Mioveni, southern Romania.

Environment Minister Laszlo Borbely said Thursday the Government will again supplement the clunkers program by issuing 50,000 scrapping vouchers. The minister said this year’s edition of the program is „spectacular”.

Out of 110,000 vouchers issued for the program so far, over 94,000 have already been distributed and nearly 70,000 old cars have been scrapped. The minister also said more than 11,000 new cars have been bought so far under the clunkers program.

Romania’s 2010 clunkers program set off on February 18 and, unlike previous editions, allows one owner to scrap several cars and receive more than one voucher.

The scrapping bonus was kept at 3,800 lei (EUR1=RON4.1285) and the Government initially said it plans to scrap about 60,000 old cars but has since revised its target to over 100,000 clunkers.
