Mid-March, the Cluj Court of Appeals sentenced Anghel to two and a half years in prison for corruption and filed Anghel’s jail-term suspension contestation.

The Court overruled Thursday the former mayor’s contestation and the ruling is definite and cannot be challenged.

On April 2, the Maramures Court suspended Anghel’s jail term for 30 days and the former mayor was released from Gherla Penitentiary where he had been incarcerated.

The jail-term suspension will expire on May 1 when the convict must return to prison.

Anghel was indicted by anticorruption prosecutors in September 2007, on charges of influence peddling. He was accused of overvaluing a building in the city that the city hall bought and thus defrauding the city hall’s budget of nearly EUR400,000.

Anghel was mayor of Baia Mare for several consecutive terms since 1993. He was also the head of the county branch of the Liberal Party, in opposition, and quit the party in March, on the day he was incarcerated.
