Romania Cancels Five Flights To Italy Due To Volcanic Ash Cloud

Otopeni spokesperson Valentin Iordache said three flights scheduled Sunday on Bucharest – Milan route were cancelled because of the ash plume, while on Baneasa airport, two flights to Florence and Bergamo, in Italy, were cancelled for the same reason.

Romanian low-cost airliner Blue Air said it cancelled return flights scheduled Sunday on routes Bucharest-Milan, Bucharest-Florence, Bucharest-Bologna and Bacau-Turin, due to the spreading cloud of volcanic ash. Also, the flight Bucharest-Vienna-Bucharest will be delayed nearly three hours.

The volcanic ash cloud that has wreaked havoc across Europe in recent weeks has reappeared over parts of Southern Spain and impacted air travel once again. The cloud is spreading from the North Atlantic across northern Portugal and Spain, closing airports across the region.

The ash, from eruptions of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland, has spread south from the North Atlantic and is also covering parts of southern France, according to charts provided by Eurocontrol, which coordinates air traffic across Europe.
