Basescu said he cannot make a statement regarding the Government’s „calculations” on the matter, but he hopes child-rearing benefits will be affected marginally or not at all.

„I hope they are minimally affected”, said the head of state.

The President also said that the recently announced expense cuts in the public sector must not impinge upon children’s allowances.

Romania’s Government will reduce child-rearing benefits starting June 1, said Tuesday Andreea Paul-Vass, economic adviser to Prime Minister Emil Boc. The Labor Ministry is still debating whether to lower the yearly income percentage or allot a fixed rate to all beneficiaries. Official sources say the Ministry will opt for the fixed rate of RON600.

March statistics published by the National Agency for Labor Conscription say there are 193,004 child-rearing indemnity beneficiaries in Romania, who require total funds of RON189,883,868.

Basescu said Sunday, after talks with union federation leaders, that social benefits for children and people with disabilities will not be reduced, adding all other subsidies are further poised to „analysis, reduction or elimination.”
