Economic Crisis Increased Child Poverty, School Abandon In Romania – NGO

The economic crisis has increased the number of impoverished Romanian children to more than 350,000 and has tripled the rate of school abandon, as around 40,000 children, mostly from rural areas, drop out of school each year, says World Vision Romania.

In a Tuesday press release, the NGO warns that access to education in Romania is still a problem for many children and their families and the global economic and financial crisis has only made things worse. The organization cites data compiled by the National Children Initiative Group, according to which the number of destitute children has increased to more than 350,000.

According to the same data, 40,000 children drop out of school each year. Most of them live in rural areas.

In 2008, World Vision Romania started the program „I want to go to ninth grade,” in which 315 sponsors help 373 impoverished children attend high school.
