Romania 1Q Employment -1.6% On Year

Romania’s employment rate fell 1.6% in the first quarter compared with the year-earlier period, slightly below the 1.5% annual decline in the European Union, official data showed Tuesday.

According to EU’s statistics office Eurostat, 220.5 million men and women were employed in the European Union in the first quarter, of which 144.3 million were in the euro area. The figures are seasonally adjusted.

Latvia posted the biggest employment decrease in the first quarter, of -14.9% compared with the same quarter of 2009, followed by Estonia (-9.9%) and Bulgaria (-7.3%).

Austria and Malta were the only members to register a raise in employment over the mentioned interval, of 0.2% and 0.6% on the year, respectively.

According to data from Romania’s statistics institute INS, over six million men and women were employed in the first quarter.
