The money will be used for highway maintenance, he said.

Romanian authorities are currently working on policy regarding a toll on highway segments located on Pan-European corridor IV. The document will be sent to the European Commission, Berceanu said.

He added that highway maintenance is demanded by the European Union, as European taxpayers want their money to go to highways which are up to EU standards.

Berceanu said the toll would be „modest,” around EUR3-4 per 100 kilometers.

The minister also said the EU allotted around EUR2 billion until 2013 for highway segments located on corridor IV.

He added the A1 Bucharest-Pitesti highway and A2 Bucharest-Constanta highway would also be subject to the toll, „probably as of next year.”
