The two CH-53 helicopters had taken part in a joint Blue Sky 2010 Romanian-Israeli exercise and were heading for Israel, the ministry said.

Local emergency service head Ion Popa said helicopter crews said they didn’t need the service’s assistance, so no intervention teams were sent to the scene.

An Israeli CH 53 helicopter that was taking part in the exercise crashed on July 26 in mountains in central Romania, killing all seven troops on board.

The Blue Sky 2010 exercise took place between July 18 and 29 at Boboc airfield and concerns training for search, rescue and medical evacuation missions.
