Romanian Govt To Lower Funds For Education, Defense, Agriculture To Pay Pensions, Social Welfare

Romania’s Government will lower budgets for education, defense, justice, transports and agriculture and direct the money to the payment of pensions, unemployment benefits and other social welfare rights to avoid further social unrest.

The Labor Ministry will get an extra 4.36 billion lei (EUR1=RON4.2404) in transfers from the state budget to the social security budget, to ensure the payment of pensions and social welfare benefits, according to the Government’s budget revision draft act, obtained by MEDIAFAX.

The Health Ministry will get an extra RON2.81 billion to cover its social healthcare budget deficit.

Extra money will also be assigned to the Ministry of Environment (RON241.2 million), Ministry of Economy (RON207.1 million), Ministry of Culture (RON56.9 million for the restoration of historical monuments), Ministry of Communications (RON49.6 million, mainly for Microsoft licenses), the Romanian Academy (RON17 million as co-financing for projects using non-refundable EU money).

However, the Government will lower the budgets of the Ministry of Education (by RON494.6 million), Ministry of Interior (RON476.8 million), Ministry of Defense (RON278.5 million), Ministry of Justice (RON198 million), Ministry of Regional Development and Tourism (RON168.6 million), Ministry of Agriculture (RON142.5 million), Ministry of Transports (RON121.7 million) and the Public Ministry, which comprises prosecution offices (RON105.2 million).
