Romania’s Ctrl Bk Will Prevent Attacks Against Leu’s Exch Rate – Deputy Gov

The money market is free, but Romania's central bank will prevent any possible attack on the leu, given that the evolution of the local currency is closely related to the country’s economic situation, central bank deputy governor Bogdan Olteanu said Tuesday.

The leu’s exchange rate has been „pretty stable” over the past year, Olteanu said during a seminar organized by consultancy and audit firm LeitnerLeitner.

Moreover, Olteanu said the essence of a free money market is the assumption that people are fair, even though there are many market players that break the rules.

As regards the privatization of lender BCR, Olteanu said the stock sale was a success, and not only a good idea.

„BCR’s privatization improved the competition and the efficiency of the banking sector,” Olteanu added.
