EXCLUSIVE: Romania Might Lower Defense Ministry’s Total Expenses By 2013

The Romanian Defense Ministry’s total expenditure might decrease to 0.73% of the gross domestic product (GDP) by 2013, from 1.29% of GDP in 2010, according to estimates in the country’s three-year fiscal strategy approved by the Government Wednesday.

The strategy estimates the Defense Ministry’s expenses will reach 6,595 million lei (EUR1=RON4.2394) in 2010, RON4,381 million in 2011 (0.80% of GDP), RON4,668 million in 2012 (0.78% of GDP) and RON4,840 million in 2013 (0.73% of GDP),

Staff expenses within the ministry are expected to hit RON2,877 million in 2010 (0.56%of GDP), RON2,978 million in 2011 (0.55% of GDP), RON3,068 million in 2012 (0.51% of GDP) and RON3,181 million in 2013 (0.48% of GDP).

Investment expenses will reach RON663 million in 2010 (0.13% of GDP) and could decrease to RON500 million in 2011 (0.09%). In 2012, investment expenses may rise to RON672 million (0.11%) and to RON718 million in 2013 (0.11%).
