The rally, attended by employees in health care, education and social assistance, ended without any incidents.

Union leader Bogdan Hossu warned the Government that people would continue to protest in the street over its austere measures that include wage cuts and layoffs.

Thousands of unionists affiliated with the CNSRL Fratia federation protested Wednesday and some of the demonstrators briefly clashed with security forces in an attempt to break through security lines toward the government building, prompting security to use tear gas. Security forces spokesman Marius Militaru said no one was injured in the incident.

Protests in Bucharest are set to continue Friday and Monday.

This week’s planned protests take place in the absence of the country’s prime minister, Emil Boc, who is in New York until Friday at the United Nations General Assembly. Boc said he left Labor Minister Ioan Botis to discuss unionists’ claims, but insisted Romania needs austerity measures.
