Some 5,000 Romanian Education Unionists Protest In Bucharest Tuesday

Almost 5,000 affiliated with the Federation of Free Unions in Education (FSLI) are protesting Tuesday, World Teachers’ Day, outside the Government’s headquarters, demanding decent salaries, the cancellation of layoff plans and investments in schools.

FSLI leaders said almost 10,000 teachers are expected to attend the protest rally on Tuesday.

Almost 170 teachers in Harghita, central Romania, affiliated with FSLI and the National Education Federation (FEN), left for Bucharest, Monday night, to join the rally. Also, teachers from all over the country are expected to reach Bucharest Tuesday to join protests.

Protests outside the Government’s building Tuesday will take place between 11.00 a.m. and 12.30 p.m. and unionists will leave in a march for the Labor and Education ministries’ headquarters.

Unionists affiliated with education union federations FEN and ‘Spiru Haret’ rallied Tuesday morning outside the Presidential Cotroceni Palace to stage protests starting 12:30 p.m.
