Bread Price In Romania Could Rise Up To 30% By Yearend – Agric Union Leader

The price of bread in Romania could increase by up to 30% by the end of the year on higher wheat prices and tax evasion in the processing sector, said Wednesday Niculae Stefan, head of the National Federation of Unions in Agriculture, Agrostar.

Stefan said, after a meeting with Prime Minister Emil Boc, that those responsible for a bread price increase are not farmers, but those processing agricultural products.

The union leader said talks with the prime minister concerned farmers’ demands, especially those regarding farmland subsidies and financial aid for cattle breeders.

Stefan told the prime minister that farmland subsidies must be negotiated with agriculture unionists, who do not agree with the sum set by authorities. He said farmers expected to receive EUR160 in subsidies per hectare of land.

The union leader said talks on subsidies will continue, adding unionists will stage protests if the two sides don’t find common ground.

Agriculture Minister Valeriu Tabara told MEDIAFAX last week that Romanian farmers will receive farmland subsidies amounting to EUR130 per hectare of land starting mid-October, up 11% compared to the financial aid granted last year (EUR117/ha).
