The plenary meeting is attended by 283 lawmakers out of the 471-seat legislature and is presided by Chamber of Deputies Speaker Roberta Anastase. The government is represented by Valentin Iliescu, state secretary for the relation with Parliament.
The 14-page motion will be read out by liberal Eugen Nicolaescu.
Opposition parties said they wish to form a „crisis government” if the motion passes and the current Cabinet is ousted and want to hold early elections within maximum six months. They also want to renegotiate Romania’s commitments under a EUR20 billion loan package agreed with the International Monetary Fund, World Bank and the European Commission.
The motion, which bears the signatures of 209 lawmakers, was submitted to Parliament Monday. The opposition needs the votes of at least 236 lawmakers to overthrow the center-right coalition government, which has a frail majority in Parliament.
