„I’m very concerned about traffic safety. People who are properly equipped for winter shouldn’t fall victims to those who aren’t,” Boagiu said, adding it costs the ministry quite a lot to clear roads when vehicles without snow tires get snowed in.

Road authorities recommend that vehicle owners should switch to snow tires when temperatures drop below 7 degrees Celsius.

Equipping a car for winter in Romania costs between 700 and a few thousand lei (EUR1=RON4.2967).

The decree also sets that drivers failing to observe the law would be fined between RON2,500 and RON4,000.
