Romanian Lower House Committee Sets Retirement Age To 63 For Women, 65 For Men

The Romanian Chamber of Deputies' committee for labor on Tuesday adopted an amendment setting the retirement age to 63 for women and 65 for men, approving President Traian Basescu's request for the pension bill's re-examination.

The amendment was adopted with 15 votes for and 5 against.

The committee’s report will only concern this amendment, requested by the head of state; the opposition’s appeal for discussions on the rest of the bill was rejected.

After the vote, social democrat deputy Ioan Cindrea said the bill now discriminated against women, who retire earlier, but the number of qualifying years required for a full pension is 35 for both genders.
