Bucharest 6th Sector Mayor Indicted For Abuse Of Position

According to the indictment, in 2006, Poteras and six other Bucharest public officials, all members of the 6th sector’s land fund subcommittee, abusively issued land deeds for six plots, with a total area of 119,647.64 sqm, worth EUR58,230,034 at the time. The deeds were issued ostensibly on the basis of Law no. 18/1991, concerning the reinstatement of the former owners of land seized by the Communist regime, but the plots had an uncertain legal status and ownership was transferred by violating the rights of the true owners.

Most of the land belonged the public or private domain of the City of Bucharest, the „Rapid” Sports Club, the National Institute of Research-Development in Chemistry and Petrochemistry (ICECHIM) and the Romanian Academy’s Biology Institute.

The prosecutors have ordered a distraint be placed on the defendants’ property. The case has been forwarded to the Court of Bucharest’s 6th sector.
