Romanian Senate Passes Bill Raising Hospital Food Funds By 30%

Romania’s Senate on Wednesday adopted a bill raising funding for food served to patients in hospitals by over 30%, to cover inflation and the five percentage point hike in the sales tax.

The bill, put forward by opposition liberals and social democrats, raises costs for daily food portions from the current 7 lei (EUR1=RON4.1276) to RON9.1 for adults who are not suffering from chronic illnesses .

For patients with chronic illnesses, funds for food have been raised to RON16.3 for patients with TB or HIV/AIDS, RON14.95 for patients with hepatitis, RON15.6 for patients with diabetes and RON14.95 for burn victims.

Funds for the food of children in hospitals have also been raised.

The bill was adopted 45 to 35 votes and two abstentions and is now pending debates in the Chamber of Deputies.
