The aid amounts to 4.6% of the value of last year’s sales, but no more than a third of the producers’ expenses during the period of estimated losses.
Officials of the Agriculture Ministry, the Agency for Payments and Intervention in Agriculture and the Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority and producers’ organization Hortifruct met Saturday to asses the losses of Romanian cucumber producers.
The Agriculture Ministry announced it will ask the European Commission for solutions to reimburse local cucumber producers following a halt in exports to the Czech Republic and Germany due to an E.coli epidemic reported in Germany. Losses are expected to hit EUR9 million in the next two months.
Tabara said locally-produced vegetables are safe to consume and advised washing any fruit or vegetable before eating.
