Heavy Thunderstorms Affected 17 Romanian Counties, Caused Power Outages

Over 80 localities in 17 Romanian counties were affected by the heavy rainstorms that occurred Wednesday and Thursday morning, which caused power outages, fell trees, caused fires and flooded people’s yards and basements, Romania’s General Emergency Inspectorate said Thursday.

Firefighters were called to intervene in 170 cases where trees fell over roads, cars and house roofs and fires started because of lighting.

Heavy thunderstorms affected counties Arad, Arges Bacau, Bihor, Bistrita-Nasaud, Buzau, Caras-Severin, Cluj, Covasna, Dambovita, Gorj, Hunedoara, Mures, Prahova, Suceava, Teleorman, and Valcea.

Railway traffic was halted for about three hours in Prahova county as contact lines were ripped by the storms. Railway traffic was also halted in the same area Wednesday evening because of power outages.

In Eforie Sud, on the Black Sea coast, a fisherman died Thursday morning as he was struck by lighting while at sea.
