The minister said 736,563 new contracts were signed between May 1 and July 25, while 128,806 ended during the same interval.

Checking a sample of some 27,000 contracts, which ended in this interval, revealed that the main reason was moving from a work contract to the day laborer registry (30% of the cases).

Lazaroiu said that 22% of the contracts that ended in this interval were for people employed through temporary work agents for a project that had been completed. The minister pointed out that, in certain cases, the employer kept the workers around even after the contract expired, paying them under the table.

Labor inspectors gave out fines totaling 100,000 lei (EUR23,500) for illegal employment. The minister said these checks will continue.
