MEP Marian-Jean Marinescu, the resolution’s sponsor, said in a statement that the European Parliament, „guardian of the observance of community rules,” once again proved its support for the prompt accession of Romania and Bulgaria to the Schengen Area. He also said the negative position held by some member states is not based on arguments or criteria stipulated by the Schengen acquis.

„Today’s resolution is, in effect, another call by the European Parliament regarding respect for European rules,” said Marinescu.

The Parliament expressed its support for the two states’ accession before, in a resolution adopted on June 8.
