„Romania has confirmed that its plans to join the euro area in 2015. I respect this and I know what it means to implement reforms that are tough on the people. I want to congratulate the Romanian government for the determination shown in implementing these reforms,” Merkel said.
In his turn, Basescu said Romania will not give up on the goal of joining the euro area by 2015. He added Romania does not believe in a fragmented Europe.
„We do not believe in a fragmented Europe and in our separate chances. Aside, perhaps, from Germany, none of the EU states would be able to cope with globalization, unless Europe is united before globalization and it is in control,” Basescu said.
He added Romania is an „unreserved” supporter of an accelerated integration of EU states.
