Romanian Democrat Liberals Challenge Extended Referendum Schedule In Constitutional Court

Romania's Democratic Liberal Party (PDL) on Thursday filed three challenges with the Constitutional Court against amendments to the ordinances on the referendum and on the duties of the Court, and against a law whereby a referendum's voting schedule is set through a government decision.

PDL vice-president Sever Voinescu said strange things happened in Parliament on Wednesday, as the MPs passed an amendment to the government ordinance on the referendum, which set the voting schedule to 7 a.m. – 11 p.m., and then adopted a law whereby the voting schedule is to be established through a government decision.

„All this ambiguity only adds to the cavalcade, making the referendum [on whether to impeach President Traian Băsescu] hard to organize and hard to follow,” said Voinescu.

The Constitutional Court will discuss the challenges to the ordinance and referendum law on July 24, and the one against the ordinance on the Court’s responsibilities on September 19.

The referendum is scheduled for July 29.
