140 Romanians In Belfast Want To Return To Homeland

Romanian foreign affairs minister Cristian Diaconescu said Sunday in a press conference that, so far, 140 Romanian citizens in Belfast, including 40 minors, expressed, at one point, the intention to return to the country.

"As soon as these incidents occurred, our diplomatic office made contact with local authorities and cooperation is beyond reproach," Diaconescu said, thanking authorities in Belfast.

"In a quite complicated moment, with obvious racist implications, we not only receive help from authorities, but also from the public opinion, from the citizens of Belfast. (...) We have all support, including financially, from our Irish colleagues, and I believe things will be alright," the minister added.

Diaconescu said so far there have been 140 Romanians who expressed their wish to leave Belfast.

"At the moment there are about 140 Romanians who expressed at one point their intention to return, and there were 40 children among them. The Ambassador is there and, should they wish it, we will find the necessary means to bring them back without any difficulty," the minister explained.
