Italian Prisons Currently Hold 2,850 Romanians

There are one million Romanians in Italy at the moment and 2,850 of them are currently under arrest, while in the first two weeks of 2009 there were deportation papers signed for 30 Romanians, according to official statistics obtained by MEDIAFAX.

Between January 1 and 16, based on Legal Decree 32 from February 28, 2008, Italian prefects signed deportation papers for 30 Romanian citizens. One of these individuals was put on a plan towards Romania as soon as the documents were signed, for public safety reasons.
 
Throughout the year 2008 Romanian police officers joined over 1,100 operations in Italy, following which there were 262 Romanians arrested and 306 Romanian citizens were investigated at large.
 
This year, of all 770 foreigners arrested by police in Rome, 234 were Romanians.
 
Twelve foreigners were arrested for sex offences, namely six Romanians, one Croatian, one Albanian, one Poll, one Bulgarian, one Senegal citizen and one Tanzanian.
 
On the other hand, Romanian authorities are currently investigating 214 Italian citizens, 84 for financial felonies, 47 for judicial felonies and 83 for other types of felonies.
 
At the moment there are more than 2,850 Romanian prisoners in Italian jails, but the Romanian community is the main collectivity in Italy, whose numbers have doubled in the past two years, reaching 625,278 residents in 2008, according to ISTAT and some one million according to Caritas/Migrantes estimations.
