Romanian Lower House Passes Bill Exempting Union Leaders From Declaring Wealth

Romania’s Chamber of Deputies on Tuesday tacitly adopted a bill that exempts union leaders from having to submit statements of wealth and interest as required by the law governing the National Integrity Agency, a EU-required body that screens the wealth of public officials.

The legislative proposition was put forth by member of the opposition Social Democratic Party who argued the obligation for union leaders to submit wealth statements would give way to abuse and pressure on the part of authorities.

The Chamber of Deputies was supposed to debate and adopt or reject the proposition by October 29. Since that term has been exceeded, it is considered adopted tacitly.

The bill still has to be approved by the Senate and signed by the head of state before it becomes law.
