About 300 ethnic Romas living in a camp in Rome, Italy, assaulted five police officers during a check-up and two Romanians were arrested following the incident, Italian daily La Repubblica reported in its online edition Monday.

About 300 Ethnic Roma Assault Police Squad In Rome, Two Romanians Arrested

The incident occurred Sunday at the entrance of the nomad camp Porta Portese in Rome. Ethnic Roma people gather there every Sunday to sell used objects, mostly in bad hygiene conditions, which is illegal.

People turned violent upon spotting the police patrol and attacked the police vehicle, surrounded by about 300 people, the eight police officers were unable to settle the crowd and five agents were beaten.

Two Romanians of Roma ethnicity were arrested following the incident.
