The European Commission will discuss Romania’s disputed tax on cars next week, sooner than initially established, following administrative changes, sources with the Commission told MEDIAFAX Friday.

Previously, infringement cases would be discussed thrice a year, but now the evaluations will be conducted monthly to ease EC’s activity, the mentioned sources said.

The European officials initially set the date to debate Romania’s case for December this year.

The Romanian authorities introduced at the beginning of this year a tax on cars’ first registration, saying they want to limit the import of polluting cars after Romania joined the EU on January 1.

The tax is computed considering several elements, which include the car’s category, pollution norm, engine capacity and the manufacturing year.

Romania decided late April to change its car tax regime, which discriminated imported used cars from domestic ones, after the European Union threatened to take legal action against the country.
