Oprea, former general director of Hidroelectrica between 2003 and 2009, was replaced with operations director Dragos Zachia. The move came after Romanian President Traian Basescu mentioned him as the object in a backstage political play.

Basescu said he used all his political pull to have Oprea replaced in 2009, after which Oprea was demoted from the helm of the state-run energy company and replaced with the company’s current general manager, Mihai David.

Hidroelectrica is majority owned by the Economy Ministry.
