According to the source, more than 250 airmen and twelve F-16 fighter jets were deployed to Romania from the Fort Worth Air Base in Texas this month.
“We have our friendly neighbor on the east side, that sometimes puts a lot of pressure, not only on our country, but on the entire eastern flank of NATO (…) Having the U.S. Air Force in Romania ensures that any possible aggression would be taken care of right away and would make them think twice before coming here,” Romanian Army Maj. Cosmin Tanase, who has been working in the operation, told Stars and Stripes.
According to the report, the troops will be deployed for a three-month period as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve, a US mission to deter Russian aggression by positioning troops on NATO’s Eastern flank.
The publication also includes a statement from the F-16 squadron’s commander, Lt. Col. Josh Padgett, who confirmed the mission and said that US presence in the region will “deter any aggression” from Russia.
