„The Netcity project serves the interests of citizens, local and central authorities, as well as telecom operators which, by using the Netcity network will be able to optimize their own infrastructure, cut operating costs and almost entirely scrap costs with maintaining their own networks,” Fuiorea said during the conference Mediafax talks about Telecom Industry.
He also said Netcity will allow operators to develop a large portfolio of telecom and IT services, similar to a portfolio built via own networks.
According to Fuiorea, the Netcity project sets every building or home in Bucharest will be connected to this fiber-optic telecom network. He also said the implementation of the project will gradually eliminate cables mounted on utility poles on the city’s public domain, stressing the use of the public domain by telecom operators does not bring so much money to Bucharest mayoralty budget.
He pointed out the Bucharest mayoralty can eliminate all cables mounted on utility poles within one week tops, stressing, however, the move would cut access to telecom services for more than 70% of clients of telecom operators in Bucharest.
According to Fuiorea, the Netcity network is operational onto 12 kilometers, while works on other 100 kilometers are underway. Works are estimated at over EUR200 million and are due in 2012.
The contract for the NetCity network was signed in June 2008 between the Bucharest mayoralty and companies UTI Systems and Netcity Telecom, and will run for 49 years.
