Romania Beef Consumption At 10% Of Total Meat Consumption, Well Below EU Avg

Beef accounts for only 10% of Romanians’ total meat consumption, compared to an EU average of 40%, and Romanians only ate 2.6 kilograms of beef per capita in the first five months of the year, according to data of the Ministry of Agriculture.

Romania’s beef consumption per capita is on the decrease, as Romanians ate 6.6 kilos of beef per capita in 2008, lower than the 6.8 kilos per capita in 2007.    

On the other hand, Romania imported 7,743 tons of refrigerated and frozen beef in the first five months of the year and exported 690 tons of beef. The country imported 108 tons of cows in the first five months and exported over 6,400 tons.

Last year, the number of cows slaughtered for meat decreased 7.5% and Romania’s beef production decreased 9.7%.
