Three Vintage Weapons Found In Romanian Village School Attic
The mayor of the commune, Stefan Sangeorzan, said the discovery was made by workers within a construction company contracted by the mayoralty to rehabilitate the building.
"The men told me the weapons were in plain sight. I am surprised that nothing happened, because children often climb into the attic to play with the pigeons. One of the weapons could have gone off and a small child could have gotten hurt. We have isolated the area and called ballistics experts from the County Inspectorate for Emergency Situations to come pick them up," the mayor said.
The official said workers also found a rifle wrapped in the May 20, 1938 issue of newspaper "Curentul," a Romanian daily from that period, which manifested strong opinions against the legionnaire movement.
"I have asked the elders of the village and learned that in that year there were groups of legionnaires around, coordinated from Nasaud, which might explain the fact that they stayed in hiding in all sorts of locations and they kept weapons," Sangeorzan added.
The Feldru General School is over 100 years old and it will be rehabilitated with through funds received from the Romanian Ministry of Education, Research and Youth, the entire project being evaluated at RON1.4 million.
