Romanian Presidential Election Prelim Results At GMT1500: Basescu – 32.52%, Geoana – 30.77%

Romania’s incumbent president Traian Basescu obtained 32.52% of votes in the first round of elections and social democrat candidate Mircea Geoana got 30.77%, according to preliminary results released by the Central Electoral Bureau after counts in 96.55% of polling stations.

Liberal candidate Crin Antonescu got 20.13% of the votes.

Next come far-rightist Corneliu Vadim Tudor (5.52%), Hungarian minority representative Kelemen Hunor (4.03%), independent Sorin Oprescu (3.21%) and Steaua owner George Becali (1.90%).

The other candidates earned less than 1%, according to the preliminary results released by the Electoral Bureau. Green Party candidate Remus Cernea obtained 0.62%, socialist Constantin Rotaru – 0.44%, independent Eduard Manole – 0.35%, Ecologist Party candidate Ovidiu Iane – 0.23% and independent Constantin Potarca earned 0.22%.
