The local police inspectorate spokesperson, Sergiu Rus, said the three women in the car, aged 20 to 45, died on the spot, while the diver, who is in critical condition, was rushed to the local hospital in Timisoara.

Rus stressed the accident occurred because of the car driver, who disregarded the visual marks at the railroad crossing.

According to the representatives of the local emergency inspectorate, the train was set in motion as soon as the railroad was cleared and, nearly 500 meters from the scene of the accident, one of the train wagons caught fire. However, the four engine mechanics in the train managed to escape unharmed.

The slow train involved in the accident travels on the route Timisoara-Periam and had no passengers aboard.
