The Alpha Tax Protect product targets individuals who wish to make time deposits in the national currency leu, in euros or US dollars.
Romania's government will discuss Wednesday a draft emergency ordinance to amend the Fiscal Code, aimed at extending the general taxation pool as of July 1.
Under the bill, the income from time and/or sight banking deposits will be subject to a 16% tax.
Alpha Bank's new time deposit will be unaffected by the potential new tax, as the bank will assume the related net interest by default, according to its statement.
Alpha Bank Romania, a unit of Greece's Alpha Bank, reported 61.7% lower pretax profit in the first quarter, hurt by higher provisions.
The bank said total loans rose 3.2% on the year to EUR4.2 billion in the first quarter, while deposits were up 15.4% on the year.
