According to Korean opera singer Jeong Ae Ree, 40, the former Romanian envoy to Singapore, 49, invited her on a night out ten days after seeing her at a concert.
On December 14, Ionescu and Jeong went to several locations, including the Shangri- La Hotel, where the diplomat had several drinks.
Jeong later was taken home at 2 a.m. (Singapore time) and the next morning she woke up at 8 a.m. and found two missed calls from Ionescu at 3.50 a.m.. Later, the two met and, according to Jeong, Ionescu started explaining that he had nothing but juice all night, the night before, after which he showed her some medication to prove that he is a diabetic.
Surveillance footage at the various locations visited on the night of the accident shows the actions of the two. Investigations continue in the case.
On December 15, 2009, a car belonging to the Romanian embassy hit three pedestrians in Bukit Panjang, Singapore. One of the victims, 30 year-old Tong Kok Wai, died ten days later, while the other two were injured. The Romanian diplomat, who is thought to have been driving the car, initially reported the car stolen and denied any wrongdoing.
