Romanian Cos Buying EU Goods To Pay VAT Monthly As Of May – Tax Watchdog

Companies buying products from the European Union member states will pay monthly, as of May, the VAT due to these operations, and not quarterly as before, within a measure aiming to lower tax frauds within the European Community, Romania’s tax authority ANAF stated Monday.

"The frauds in the intra-communitarian tax sector is alarming in the entire Europe. It is like a carrousel leaving from UK and stopping in Romania’s southeastern city of Constanta," ANAF’s president Sorin Blejnar said.

According to him, the measure will lead to "disorganizing the networks" specialized in VAT frauds.

The first VAT payments due for the current month will be made as of May 25, Blejnar added.

Gabriel Carbunaru, deputy general commissar in Romania’s Financial Guard, said that about 13,680 intra-communitarian operations had been monitored in the first four months of the year. About 3,096 companies had been selected for frauds, out of which 214 could not been found.

According to him, these companies’ frauds reached 134 million lei (EUR1=RON4.1760), while the value of the assets confiscated from them was of RON8 million.
